Are We Shaped More Than We Shape Ourselves?

We all have our humble beginnings as babies and grow into adults. Although we are more or less similar at start, we end up as people with totally different identities and personalities. This final outcome may have something to do with our genetics, but most often this is influenced by factors that are out of our hands, like our upbringing, friends, social interactions, etc.

This raises the question: Are we interconnected at our core, hence the similarities in our beginnings? And more importantly, do we shape ourselves, or are we merely moulded by external factors that are out of our control?
