This topic is about the February 2024 Philosophy Book of the Month, Beyond the Golden Door: Seeing the American Dream Through an Immigrant's Eyes by Ali Master

The American Dream has historically been a beacon of hope, symbolizing the ideals of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity achievable through hard work and determination. It promised that anyone, regardless of origin or class, could attain personal success and upward mobility. However, as society evolves, so does the interpretation of this dream, igniting discussions on its current validity and applicability in the modern world.

The evolving interpretations of the American Dream now encompass broader aspirations beyond mere material wealth, including personal fulfillment, environmental sustainability, and social justice. Despite challenges such as income inequality, systemic barriers, and socio-economic disparities, the dream continues to inspire individuals globally, embodying a life of prosperity attainable through perseverance.

Yet, realizing the American Dream is increasingly recognized as requiring systemic changes to ensure its accessibility to all. This realization invites us to reflect on the dream's resilience and adaptability in mirroring the aspirations and values of successive generations.

Against this backdrop, we invite our members to share their perspectives, divided into three distinct groups:

For Born Americans:
- Have you achieved, or are you on the path to achieving, the American Dream? Does the American Dream still hold its value and promise in today's America for you, or has its significance evolved or perhaps diminished amidst contemporary challenges?

For Immigrants like Ali Master:
- Reflecting on your journey to the United States, have you achieved what you aspired to, and how does it compare to what you might have achieved had you remained in your original country? Ali Master's story of immigrating from Pakistan to the U.S. and realizing the American Dream provides a profound insight into its significance for immigrants.

For People from Other Countries:
- Do you view the American Dream as a reality still worth pursuing, or do you find that what you have or can achieve in your own country surpasses this dream? Please include your country in your response to add valuable context to your perspective.

As the initiator of this discussion, I believe it's only fair that I share my perspective first.

Currently residing in Sri Lanka, I am witnessing firsthand the detrimental effects of corrupt politics and the ensuing financial crisis on my country's future and living conditions. In this context, envisioning a better future here seems almost miraculous. Consequently, I am open to the possibility of relocating, although the United States ranks relatively low on my list of preferred destinations.

My apprehension towards the U.S. is twofold: I harbor concerns about its significant and often criticized role in global politics and the safety issues within its borders, notably the free access to firearms and the frequency of mass shootings. While recognizing that my perception may be influenced by media portrayals, the sense of uncertainty and insecurity I associate with life in the U.S. is palpable, making countries like the UK, New Zealand, or Australia appear more appealing by comparison.

Regarding the American Dream, I acknowledge its potential for realization, albeit not at its once-envisioned pinnacle. The criteria for a quality life have evolved, and it seems the U.S. is diverging from, rather than converging on, these contemporary global expectations of well-being and prosperity. This shift prompts me to question whether the American Dream, in its traditional sense, still offers a viable blueprint for fulfillment and success.

I am open to the possibility that my views have been shaped by media narratives and welcome corrections or alternative insights. I encourage everyone here to share their opinions on this compelling topic. Thank you.
