When you send a private message it appears to stay in the outbox for a while before being sent. Why is this?

My understanding is that it appears to stay there until the recipient picks it up. So it's not an issue of not being sent -- it can help you know when the receiver has seen it.

Yes, the message will be in the outbox until it is opened by the recipient. You can edit or delete the message up until it is received by the recipient.

The sent message will appear in your outbox as long as it appears as an unread message in the recipient's inbox.
