An informal survey. Who is the best drummer you've ever come across? Not the one who can manage the most beats per second, that would be Billy Cobham. The one that you admire for being the BEST drummer you've come across.
Mine is Michael Giles (early King Crimson).
Seems we have a lot of drummers here, a lot of really good ones come to mind for me (Danny Carey from Tool, Steve Perkins from Jane's Addiction, Vinny Paul from Pantera, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd) but I get the sense that a 'drummer's drummer' would probably be in a modern jazz band, and it might be for no other reason that they have more room to show off and grind for a minute or two straight in ways which other genres generally don't allow.

I know we have discussed similar things in the past. If it's not obvious: I'm looking for recommendations, perhaps to discover new music.
Your favourite bassist, also the one you admire the most, would be good too.

I wasn't necessarily thinking of a "drummer's drummer", but why not? Thanks for the reply!

Being a drummer myself, I appreciate great drumming skill, but I don't like most drum solos. They simply don't sound good to my ear. Here's a drum solo that both my brain and ears can enjoy:

I always found Mick Fleetwood quite an entertaining drummer just for the facial expressions.
And that guy from Def Leppard has to be admired for drumming with one arm.
The Len Bright Combo. Phasers On Stun. Not their best. I always liked their name though. There are far too few bands with "combo" in their name. Almost as rare as football teams with "Hotspur" in their name, rather then boring old "United" or "City".
