The primary goal of prisons protect the society from those who hurt and whose actions are a detriment to society. The secondary goal is to try and reform criminals and allow them a chance at redemption.

Prisons are necessary, they are a way to control people who can't or wont control themselves and to protect the integrity of the societal agreements the law is designed to uphold.

I believe some form of correction must exist for people who do not abide by the law. If there are laws and we have to comply with them, something has to be done regarding the people who don't. Otherwise, nobody would. Prisons are necessary, but what is not needed is the treatment that some prisoners receive in some prisons. They should be treated as human beings. They might have made a mistake in life because they did not know much about other ways to behave.
