To many, Supertramp were "uncool" - too pop - but I always loved their sound and Floyd-like production style, and the arrangements, the melodies and intelligent lyrics.

Huge Supertramp fan. Never saw them live.

Hi-fi pressings of Crime of the Century, back in the days when records were released on vinyl, were spectacular for those blessed with suitable hi-fi systems. That Fender Rhodes piano is very distinctive. It's a primary feature too on Greenslade albums, and just as distinctive.

Listening to Jeff Back's four best albums (according to AllMusic, and its users), on shuffle-play. A sadly neglected guitar talent. Some just don't quite make it as we think perhaps they deserve...?

He is a magnificent talent. I don't think he's too neglected, though. The man is worth about $18 million, and he has managed this by mostly playing instrumental music, which is not usual.

Instrumentals in general are not very popular and I dearly hope they come back into favour. If Beck had continued to work with singers he would be much richer, but he would have far fewer opportunities for musical expression.

The duo I'm in plays mostly instrumentals because singers are such a PITA ... no no no ... because more focus can be given to the music's form and content, as opposed to just vamping on monotonously under some vocal story. Most times, song lyrics are terrible. Personally, I don't feel compelled to listen to the keening of sexually frustrated primates, over and over and over and over ...

In comparison with his contemporaries? Clapton, Page, Hendrix...?

As for instrumental music, much of the music I listen to is instrumental. There was a time when I rarely listened to music with vocals. Now I'm a little more catholic in my tastes, having discovered poetic lyricists like Dylan (OK, I already knew about Dylan), Tom Waits, Patti Smith, Thea Gilmore, Brian Eno, (some) David Bowie, and so on.

If he is less known in some circles, that may be because, while he's the best musician of the four, he's the weakest songwriter. Not that he's bad by any means, but the others are/were especially good.

I mostly listen to instrumentals these days. I love their innocence. No messages. No complaints. No sexual frustration/satiation (although instrumentals can certainly climax). Just alteration of the air over time that can mean whatever you want it to mean, or it might just beautiful.

I enjoy the lyrics of Joni Mitchell and the Indigo Girls. This one is not really my kind of music but the lyrics are excellent.

Loved them in high school, saw them numerous times live, unfortunately after the laser shows were regulated out of existance.

Though Reaper was not my favorite song.

I mostly posted the link to that song because I'd just written a post in another topic about birth and death. Usually when I post a link to music here it's vaguely related to something that's happening in another topic.

Ooo, thanks for the tip! I've never heard of the Indigo Girls, but if you're prepared to mention them in the same sentence as Joni, I'll definitely check them out.
