Point taken! I was anticipating how men of war might use the idea of the unknown known to pontificate away their culpability by trying to create some thread of support from those who share their world view and by share I mean who have been programmed to share his their of view.
Here is a link to an interview with Zizek and David Horowitz with Julian Assange on RTAmerica Its a bit disjointed and almost playful but interesting none the less.

This riddle, if I'm right, derives from an arabic myth about the princess and the tiger. Same scenario, guards and all, except behind one door is the princess and the other is the tiger.

Thanks!
The only reference I've come up with is this, which would only date to 1882 and not arabic at all.

Do you have anything older?

I'm pretty sure I've got a book with it. I'll try and see if I can find it.

Sounds like a variation of the "Before the Law" parable from Kafka's "The Trial." Only the guy was trying to get in instead of out & all he had to do was walk past the guard.

Firstly my apologies for my delayed return to this thread!
Partinobodycular gives the solution in essentially the same form as Dr Who did. Scott, I owe you an apology for thinking at first that your solution was fallacious! But on re-reading I realise that you have actually set out its correct logical foundation, which is certainly more than I was able to do.
