I think the answer lies in an analogy of a hot air balloon:
Common sense says that the energy from the burning of fuel lifts the balloon but it is gravity that lifts the balloon, the energy from the burning fuel creates a condition (less density) which gravity acts on and the balloon rises.

We tend to think of the past, present and future as three distinct phases of time but in and of our own existance we cannot seperate them. The moment we think of as the present is actualy our existance in the future while perceiving the past.
At the very moment you read this word .. Pabst .. your physical being is already in the future and the light has already reflected off of the can carrying the information (Pabst) to your brain. The very moment your consciousness processes that information is the very moment you think of as the present, but in fact it is the past already.
So, your consciousness is in a constant yet fluid state of playing catch up to your physical self using information from the past that creats the illusion of present.
Therefore, the moment of present in the physical world is not the same moment of present in conciousness.
