The question what the origin is of intelligence, is interesting. Teleonomy attempts to seek the source of intelligence in value-endpoints in a predetermined program that is guided by natural selection.

The idea "the sum is more than its parts" that has been endorsed authentically by major philosophers throughout the ages, might show that intelligence might reside in a context that fundamentally underlays both the parts and the whole.

The source of natural intelligence would reside in a context that isn't reference-able using empirical means. A context that could be named a 'free context'.

Artificial intelligence would be the use of empirical means to replicate the results of natural intelligence for empirical value-endpoints.

Large AI models are capable of doing things that they have not been explicitly trained to do, which should scare the **** out of Nick Bostrom and anyone else worried (rightfully) about an superintelligent AI running amok. We currently have no way, apart from empirical study, to determine the limits of current AI systems. As for future AI models that are orders of magnitude larger and more complex — good friggin’ luck!


The notion that nobody knows how LLMs actually produce results is interesting. It ads mystery.

When one considers the idea that when cosmic structure is evidence of life, that AI must be alive, there might already be a 'free component' in AI that serves life. It could be evidence that current AI already has purpose beyond itself.

The argument is that no current AI technology does it. You're relying on hopes that it will do it someday.

You can ask chat bots whatever you want, it will produce text that simulates comprehension. It's impressive, it's a clever simulation, but it doesn't understand one bit of what is saying. It can't because it's just an inanimate, lifeless machine. No one should pretend that a pocket calculator understands mathematics.

So what? I can throw a rock and I might never be able to know exactly where it lands. That does not mean that the rock is autonomous, directing itself towards its desired goal.
