From a secular view, religion is a tool of power.

Removing or managing competitors is also important in competition.

The number one driver for conflict is sexual selection, with many instinctive and even aware actions to that end. Men are more attractive when they dominate by force.

Financiers seeking money, money is stored power. power is the bait men use for selection.

Killing other men is demonstrating power directly and can trump money(stored power). Most of this occurs in the subconscious, but some understand and use it.

Follow and obey the ultimate power (God), puts that person into power also as being associated with ultimate power. Lots of ways to slice this one and consider different sides. In the end, many war is from religious reason, we can look deeper and consider why the religion exists and find the old topics of what are people and what drives them to do.

Look at what happened to Central Europe's experiment with autarchy about 80 years back. Likewise, America's jihad to spread degenerate consumer culture (witness the engineered war in the Ukraine, the war-pimping against China) is scarcely in the name of any god.
