Years ago, my old boss was a keen amateur astronomer and since I'd worked for him before going to Uni I was free to go back there during the summer, phone the personnel/HR department and get put back on the payroll for the summer. Then my boss had me work on some software for controlling his astronomical telescope. Them were the days.
One thing I noticed over the decades is that, if management finds out that you have some extra cool aspect happening in your job, they will immediately pass policy to remove it. It was a constant process of losing whatever I liked most about workplaces, and then lowering expectations to find new "favourite things" - to be later taken by management. In the end, my job was teaching people to construct an automated system to replace me. Doing a brain dump was actually quite fun, but it's not fun that is meant to last :)
