And I have to agree, that although I disagreed with you earlier, this sort of an approach would necessitate the laws being guidelines rather than strict sentences, but at the same time need to be subjected to evaluations and social discussions.

I'm not convinced that a political ideology — libertarianism — is the answer to the questions being asked here? And I am interested to know why you seem to assume and accept that libertarianism is such a desirable and universally-accepted belief system, as your words seem to suggest...?

The political ideology, libertarianism, may not be 'the' answer to what we discuss here. But I believe it definitely can be 'an' answer or at least a beginning to an answer.

I am sorry if I implied that libertarianism is a widely accepted concept. But I believe it can be and has to be a widely accepted concept. I am not speaking about the political ideology or the political party that is supporting (or pretending to support) it, but the core concept of respecting others' right to live, right to have property and it to be safeguarded, etc. Why anyone would not like such a system?

This is not the place for a detailed consideration of Libertarianism. I was just a little surprised to see it suggested in this topic, as though a political ideology would/could help us discover "a definition of "crime" that ties it to some rationally defensible moral standard".

Crime is a crime and cannot be justified. I believe that we have to be vigilant but if you are protecting yourself its self-defense, not a crime.
