tonylang I won’t again pick apart your lengthy posts and point out all the nested hypotheses on which the LINE hypothesis itself rests and which make it entirely speculative. Rather, I will just provide a general review of the hypothesis. (Although, if you wish, we can discuss particulars.)

As I have said, the LINE hypothesis is an interesting idea. However, as well relying of on a large number of nested of hypotheses, it seems to be entirely built around a perceived need for eternal life of the sort envisaged by the doctrine of reincarnation of eastern religions. You call this “re-instantiation”. And you say that the sort of reinstantiation we will get will depend on our choices and behaviour in this current life. When I asked you why you needed re-instantiation you said that it was “to ensure the continuity of individuality (POV) beyond a single physical lifetime”. But that is merely to say that re-instantiation is needed for reinstantiation, which is circular.

Moreover, your approach seems to be entirely the wrong way around for a theory that purports to be scientific. It should start with an actual phenomenon that needs explaining. Reinstantiation is not a phenomenon that has ever been detected and, therefore, there is nothing that needs explaining. There are no theoretical considerations, much less any empirical evidence, that would suggest the existence of such a phenomenon. A perceived need for reincarnation, or reinstantiation, is not evidence of reinstantiation.

The evidence we do have suggests that when we die our life and our individuality are extinguished. We become compost. Our atoms are scattered and return to the ecosystem and recycled to provide the raw materials for the construction of new organisms. The recycling of our constituent atoms is the only sort of continuity there appears to be and this is already explained quite adequately by the current life sciences, biochemistry and physics. Thus, yours seems to be a hypothesis in need of something to explain.

Eternal life, reincarnation, reinstantiation … these might be true. Many people would like to believe they are true. However, there is no evidence for them whatsoever and, unfortunately, no evidence for reinstantiation is exactly what the LINE hypothesis provides. Still, like religion, we can believe it if we want to, or need to. One of the things in favor of religion is that it cannot be disproved. Your hypothesis enjoys that same advantage.

I have tried my best to find ways in which your hypothesis might be workable. However, as a scientific theory, all it leaves me with are a host of unanswered and potentially unanswerable questions. And zero answers.

No one else here has even tried to read and give detailed commentary on his tortuously inpenetrable posts. So, I think I have done the best I could. Today viruses appear to be no more than a non-living container of RNA/DNA strands that selfishly functions to multiply and distribute its genetic payload by parasitic means. Belinda, I was contrasting mystical notions with scienctific hypotheses. They are some impoortant differences.

One is that mysticism, like religion, cannot be disproved. A scientific hypothesis, on the other hand, can be disproved and it is usually clear how a scientific hypothesis could in fact be disproved. For example, Einstienian relativity predicted that star light would be bent in the presence of massive objects. The way to disprove that hypothesis was clear. Measure it. The effect was predicted to be very small so it would take a really massive object for the effect to become noticible. But by measuring how the image of a star is shifted when the sun is close-to it in the sky from our point of view, the effect should be apparent. So a measurement was performed during a solar eclipse so that the star in question would be visible. And the effect was seen. That was objective evidence in favour of Einstein's theory. If the predicted effect had not been seen, then that would have been a problem for Einstein's theory.

But it's hard to think of any objective test we could do which would disprove souls, reincarnation, or life after death? I can't think of any such objective tests. And that is an important difference between science and mysticism. A scientific hypothesis can be proved wrong by experiment. Religious and mystical claims cannot. For example, I can claim that Saint Mary lives in heaven with Jesus and God. But is there any objective test that could prove this claim to be wrong?

In light of this, three different hypotheses have been proposed for the origin of viruses but all three have their problems. One problem is exactly when viruses first evolved. If they need living cells to reproduce, then they must have evolved after regular living cells evolved. And this may be a problem for the idea of viruses being the point of departure for the hypothesized "mobility of individulity".
