Many artists use auto-tune. Auto-tune is great for any aspiring singer, especially if used sparingly to touch up a harmony gone slightly flat. However, many artists take it upon themselves to abuse auto-tune to the point where their voice is hardly recognizable. Because really, anyone can sing with auto-tune.
Here is a great article about how auto-tune has dominated the pop music industry (and others to a lesser extent).
So are people who sing heavily with auto-tune and do not write their own songs still artists?
Just for fun, "Forbes reported that Spears was the highest paid female musician of 2012, with earnings of $58 million, having last topped the list in 2002." (Wikipedia) Now listen to Britney Spear's leaked video without auto-tune.
Not the worst auto-tone abuser, but definitely a culprit. Especially since she didn't even write the song
I come from the future. And I can tell you that yes, auto-tuners are artists... Well as long as they produce music. There's no copium here... Britney Spears looks better than my favorite guitar player, John Petrucci... But just from that, it doesn't mean she's more or less of an artist... Well not JUST from that at least (Other things in my humble opinions will make her less artistic compared to the bear, Petrucci
). But Petrucci also has a certain look, a certain image and a certain presence with that guitar that all play into how we receive Dream Theater's music. Why should Britney... Or from the future, Taylor Swift... receive any less (or more) credit for their look and presence?
Same with auto-tune: people love it? And it stands through time? It's art. It doesn't? It's not.
It passes both criteria... So yeah.
If anyone can make a better song with auto-tune than you and you're the type to complain about it because that's all it takes to outdo you, you really should try harder and write good lol.
P.s. From the future again... Tcccchhh ...Tchhhhh... Radio... Ca...Tccchh.. you..Tchhh... Hear Me??.. Tccchhh Tcccchhh.... Yeah they don't accept YouTube or outside links on the Online Philosophy Club in 2024 unless you're a paying member. That's life. Thought I'd send a memo
