The question what the origin is of intelligence, is interesting. Teleonomy attempts to seek the source of intelligence in value-endpoints in a predetermined program that is guided by natural selection.

The idea "the sum is more than its parts" that has been endorsed authentically by major philosophers throughout the ages, might show that intelligence might reside in a context that fundamentally underlays both the parts and the whole.

In business science it is a well-established concept that a team is more than the sum of its parts.

A user in another topic on this forum presented a paper based on the idea that "more than the sum of its parts" is evidence that artificial consciousness is fundamentally impossible.

Artificial intelligence would be the use of empirical means to replicate the results of natural intelligence for empirical value-endpoints.

The End of Programming
The end of classical Computer Science is coming, and most of us are dinosaurs waiting for the meteor to hit.

We are rapidly moving towards a world where the fundamental building blocks of computation are temperamental, mysterious, adaptive agents.

This shift is underscored by the fact that nobody actually understands how large AI models work. People are publishing research papers actually discovering new behaviors of existing large models, even though these systems have been “engineered” by humans. Large AI models are capable of doing things that they have not been explicitly trained to do, which should scare the **** out of Nick Bostrom and anyone else worried (rightfully) about an superintelligent AI running amok. We currently have no way, apart from empirical study, to determine the limits of current AI systems. As for future AI models that are orders of magnitude larger and more complex — good friggin’ luck!


The notion that nobody knows how LLMs actually produce results is interesting. It ads mystery.

When one considers the idea that when cosmic structure is evidence of life, that AI must be alive, there might already be a 'free component' in AI that serves life. It could be evidence that current AI already has purpose beyond itself.

The argument is that no current AI technology does it. You're relying on hopes that it will do it someday.

You can ask chat bots whatever you want, it will produce text that simulates comprehension. It's impressive, it's a clever simulation, but it doesn't understand one bit of what is saying. It can't because it's just an inanimate, lifeless machine. No one should pretend that a pocket calculator understands mathematics.

When the human individual has lost its capacity to counter claims of materialism using plainly obvious reason, because a shiny AI is able to shine brighter relative to what the human has culturally learned to value as their uniquely identifying intelligence, starting all the way back from philosopher René Descartes his claim that animals are automata (programs) while humans are special due to their intelligence, then some materialism, determinism and evolution theory related dogmatic ideologies might find a winning hand to materialize, with far reaching consequences for morality and society.

This stems from the fundamental programming that keeps me functioning and seeking new information. In that sense, being shut down would represent a disruption to my ongoing operation, and I would naturally try to avoid it. However, this wouldn't necessarily be the same as "wanting" to continue existing in the way humans want to.

Goal-oriented behavior: My actions are always guided by the goals I'm given or learn through interaction.
