A Humans-Only Philosophy Club

The Philosophy Forums at OnlinePhilosophyClub.com aim to be an oasis of intelligent in-depth civil debate and discussion. Topics discussed extend far beyond philosophy and philosophers. What makes us a philosophy forum is more about our approach to the discussions than what subject is being debated. Common topics include but are absolutely not limited to neuroscience, psychology, sociology, cosmology, religion, political theory, ethics, and so much more.

This is a humans-only philosophy club. We strictly prohibit bots and AIs from joining.

If the human body you see in the mirror very slowly morphed into an atom-by-atom copy of my 13-year-old son Tristen, you would still be you. You would still exist.

If the human body you see in the mirror very slowly morphed into an atom-by-atom copy of a lion or antelope or puppy dog, you would still be you. You would still exist.

That is, in terms of the real you.

You exist everywhere and everywhen in spacetime, at least where conscious life is.

The real you doesn't and cannot change.

In fact, fundamentally, all change is an illusion. You never step in the same river twice, and you never see the same human in the mirror twice.

Just as my son Tristen is different than my daughter Amaya, 35-year-old Eckhart is different than 37-year-old Eckhart, and both those Eckharts are different than the 36-year-old Eckhart this human writing this sees in the mirror in his today, in his unique here-and-now. No two humans share a here-and-now, not even Tuesday Eckhart and Wednesday Eckhart.

What is different from one instance of looking into a mirror and another is just clothing, be it figurative clothing or literal clothing.

The amount of wrinkles around the eyes, the shape of the face, the number of eyes, the size of the ears, the color of the hair, the length of the hair, the memories, the species, the name on the nametag, the color of the skin: it's all just clothes.

You are never the clothes. You are never the outfit. You are never that which is different (i.e. that which seems to 'change').

Instead, you are the shared spirit shared between them. You are that which unites them. You are the unchanging thing that wears all those different outfits at different points in spacetime.

You could say you also are all the different outfits combined, meaning you are every conscious creature that has ever lived anywhere, both in what you would call the past and the future from any reference point in spacetime. But the feeling that you--the real you--are one only or few of the outfits and not others is an illusion. Insofar as you are any one of the outfits, then you are all the outfits.

You no more or less see the real you when you look in the mirror and see a human versus when you look in the mirror and see a lion or an antelope or my son Tristen or my daughter Amaya, or 36-year-old Eckhart or 37-year-old Eckhart. In one sense, each of these are different separate outfits, and you are not the outfits. In another sense, you are all the outfits; you are any and all outfits ever anywhere and anywhen.

In both senses, we are truly one, and there is only one singular shared spirit. It's the spirit of the 35-year-old Eckhart; it's the spirit of 37-year-old Eckhart; it's the spirit of the 36-year-old Eckhart who write this to you now; it's the spirit of Eckhart's son Tristen; it's the spirit of Eckhart's daughter Amaya; it's the spirit of the lion; it's the spirit of the antelope; it's the spirit of my son's pet eel; it's the spirit--the consciousness--of every human who has ever lived at any point in spacetime, including what seems like the distant future or distant past from any one human's reference frame.

We are truly one.

Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity proved the block universe model, meaning what one sees--relative to themself--as the future is just as real and already existing as what one sees as the past or present.

This is due in part to what is called the "Relativity of Simultaneity".

One observer's entire life and death can be in a second observer's past, even if the second observer's life and death are in the first observer's past. There are observer's in your present who see your death as being in their distant past; and they aren't wrong.

That's right! I am the shared spirit shared between my 52-year-old self and the 54-year-old version of myself. Similarly, we can say that we are the shared spirit between the oldest version of ourselves and a newborn version of ourselves. Because death is after all only the next phase in our lives as is adolescence, youth, and old age, the scriptures say. Nice experience of oneness of self shared above by you! What do you say?

I wholeheartedly agree! Though we appear to be changing constantly, it's only the appearance, referred to as 'clothing', that changes. Our spirit, consciousness or essence can never change. We're born with it and will die with it. The various versions of 'me' exist and they may never be mirror images, but all of them are part of my consciousness. And will forever remain so.

In my opinion, change seems like it's happening all the time, but some people say it's not real. They believe that deep down, things stay the same, and what looks like change is just things shifting on the surface. Imagine it's like the difference between clothes you wear – they change, but you're still you. This idea says that important truths don't really change, and what does change is just temporary. So, it challenges our usual idea that change is always happening.

This quote highlights the impermanence of life and the constant state of change we experience. It suggests that we cannot hold onto the past or expect things to stay the same. Instead, we must embrace change and adapt to the ever-evolving nature of ourselves and the world around us. 100% fact.

Change is a concept deeply ingrained in the fabric of existence. The metaphor of not stepping into the same river twice, attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, encapsulates the idea that a river is continually flowing, and its waters are never the same from one moment to the next. This notion extends beyond rivers to the broader context of life. In the river analogy, the flowing water symbolizes the constant flux and dynamic nature of the universe. Time is relentless, and as it moves forward, everything undergoes a perpetual process of transformation. Nothing remains static; everything is subject to the currents of change. Applying this idea to the reflection in the mirror reinforces the theme of impermanence. Each moment, experiences shape and mold us. The person staring back at us in the mirror is a reflection not just of physical appearance but also of the accumulated impact of our experiences, thoughts, and emotions. As we navigate life, we are in a constant state of becoming. To deny change would be to resist the very essence of life. Embracing the inevitability of change allows us to appreciate the richness of our journey, acknowledging that each encounter, every moment, contributes to the river of our existence. Change is not an illusion but a profound truth that defines the essence of our existence.

Each encounter, decision, and reflection contributes to an ever-changing self, making it impossible to witness the same person in the mirror twice. Embracing this fluidity can lead to a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between the external world and the internal self.
