In his Aesthetics, von Hildebrand proposes that "love responds to the overall beauty of the person who is loved.

When words fail us, "we should not doubt," von Hildebrand writes, "that love is a value-response simply because when asked why we love someone we cannot indicate the value qualities that motivate our love." We do not love an amalgamation of a person's characteristics; we love the person as a primary subject, irreducible to aesthetic particulars. We are not moved by his face alone; we do not respond to her eyes. The apprehension of beauty in love is a response to the whole person. While it is clear that the particulars of the beloved may in fact be aesthetically pleasing, when we speak of "metaphysical beauty," we are speaking of a certain form of beauty that is beyond the visible and audible, in von Hildebrand's words. This is the type of beauty that one cannot perceive with the eyes or ears—we can be blind to the world, and still "see" the metaphysical beauty of another. In the words of John F. Crosby:

The more you come to know and love some person, the less you find yourself able to express what it is that you know and love. You find something in the other that is unutterable, ineffable, unspeakable.

Gabriel Marcel argued that love and beauty were related to each other. He said:

"You know that you have truly loved someone when you have glimpsed in them that which is too beautiful to die".

I think he is right.

Commonly beauty in the case of love is generally thought of as physical beauty, but it is not hard to love or be infatuated with someone physically beautiful. There is nothing that is too beautiful to die, its poetic license. If you think of the soul as the mind as I do, then the beautiful soul is really what matters. Most often superficial beauty wins out over the beautiful soul. We are after all animals and the mating game is the same for us is it is for our animal cousins, physical beauty is a sign of health, childbearing, and being a good provider still trump the beautiful soul. This is in the mating game of course, when one has a disinterested interest, we can recognize beautiful souls and celebrate them in their rarity, society always needs its heroes to regenerate society and give us renewed faith in human nature. The defeated soul has its own beauty, and its suffering awakens a beautiful souls heart
