My personal experience is a toughness is not part of anything most humans would subject themselves to.Since you're asking, it sounds like you don't have any experience with nonintervention, ie you typically intervene. Is that true? If so, what do you do in your scenario?
For example: a woman is being hit by a man in front of a group of people. None of the people intervene. None of the people do anything with those handy cell phones beyond recording the poor woman being hit. Are they cowards? Or are they acting out of self-preservation because they don't want the violence projected at them?
