A Humans-Only Philosophy Club

The Philosophy Forums at OnlinePhilosophyClub.com aim to be an oasis of intelligent in-depth civil debate and discussion. Topics discussed extend far beyond philosophy and philosophers. What makes us a philosophy forum is more about our approach to the discussions than what subject is being debated. Common topics include but are absolutely not limited to neuroscience, psychology, sociology, cosmology, religion, political theory, ethics, and so much more.

This is a humans-only philosophy club. We strictly prohibit bots and AIs from joining.

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

Philosophy is as much about small things as it is about The Big Questions.
It’s why we have Philosophical Quotes Diaries on our desk. So we can be reminded once a day to do something we forgot to do to make our life bearable. We wouldn’t bother if it was a dissertation on how we should treat others. “Be nice” seems easy to identify with, even if we ignore it tomorrow.

There’s a great deal I don’t care about. Some days I worry about that aspect of my character.

Would i be a better person if I cared more about more things?
Is caring an essential mindset for survival?
Where would I even start?
Do I even know what it means to care?
Christine often tells me I don’t care, especially about the things she cares about. I agree. I don’t care. I’m not fussed about keeping a clean house. It doesn’t bother me what I wear when I go to the shops, I only recycle because there’s a council bi-law that says I should care.
Which brings me to the final point for the day: should we act caringly if we don’t care? I don’t care about my siblings yet I’m told I should and demonstrate that caring to them. I could only align that with being nice to a great white shark.

How does caring fit with your current philosophy?

I think there is a big difference between living alone and living together with other individuals. Once one has chosen either iving alone or living together with other individuals one's own conduct of living is determined. You can't living together with other individuals as if you were living alone.

Perhaps it might be more helpful to consider why you don't care, and even what you mean by "care", as in caring for others?

Nice questions! Caring is a result of the existential human condition. You know, there's a some-thing that causes human emotion. Materialism, Atheism and other belief systems tend to dismiss things like Agency, Teleology and the Will to be. Worrying about "my character" would fall under those domains. Too, it's cognitive science kinds of stuff. But paradoxical like Existentialism.

“Most people experience both tragedy and joy in varying proportions. Any philosophy which leaves out either cannot be considered to be comprehensive.” ABRAHAM MASLOW

No that that's out of the way, next problem!

The small things should be decided based on the big things. One starts by deciding what one feels is one's purpose in life. Then how generally to accomplish it. The small things follow from this.

In my case, I think my purpose in life is to serve my genes. I think most of humanity is harmful to this purpose, and I hate almost everyone I meet when I have the misfortune of having to leave my house. But showing this publicly doesn't serve any purpose. So basically I ignore people unless I have some need to manipulate them in some way. I don't care about them except in a negative sense of wishing that they were dead.

Humans are naturally tribal, and both Christianity and modern culture have misguided the tribal instinct to apply to all of humanity. Other cultures are more sensible. I myself feel a strong tribal instinct, I just can't find a tribe worth being a member of. Caring is mostly a tribal instinct.

My heart is fine; thanks for your concern. If your post was aimed at the OP, it might've been useful to say so? 👍😉
