Humans-Only Club for Discussion & Debate
A one-of-a-kind oasis of intelligent, in-depth, productive, civil debate.
Topics are uncensored, meaning even extremely controversial viewpoints can be presented and argued for, but our Forum Rules strictly require all posters to stay on-topic and never engage in ad hominems or personal attacks.
Chat about anything your heart desires here, just be civil. Factual or scientific questions about philosophy go here (e.g. "When was Socrates born?"), and so most homework help questions belong here. Note, posts in the off-topic section will not increase new members post counts. This includes the introductions and feedback sections.

As, like you, I have drifted away from heavy rock, I wasn't totally overboard with Aenima. It's a cross between DP/LZ and Rage Against The Machine (one-hit wonders: one exceptional album only). I don't see them as being quite as talented as DP or LZ. Fans more centred on heavy rock would love Tool more than I do, I think. I can certainly see the appeal.
I remember I was 12 when Undertow came out, I really didn't get Sober and the other songs - if anything I sort of clustered them in as a Primus sort of oddity and ignored them. When Aenima came out a few of the songs landed slightly different, it was when I first heard 'H', '46 and 2', 'Push It', 'Third Eye', that's where I started to get what they were doing.

I loved both bands back in the day, and Black Sabbath too.
I liked Sabbuff, but not like LZ or DP, both of whom seemed to me to be rather more talented.
Sabbath were a bit on the bone-headed side, yes, but I was a bone-headed teen :)

Gentle Giant were easily as good as the bands that topped the (LP) charts at the time, but it never quite happened for them. Anyone who's never heard of them could do a lot worse than check them out. Octopus is one of their best albums, but they're pretty good live anyway, so most performances will give you video junkies the idea. I haven't watched the video I just linked, of course. TVs are for watching video; computers are for stills and text. So there. ;)
Octopus is a superb album. I only came to appreciate Gentle Giant in later years. Most prog bands are talented but GG's musicianship still stood out, along with Uncle Frank.
How come you don't like viewing video content on your PC? I thought I was old school because I don't watch video on phones, but I do enjoy YouTube on the PC. A lot of top bands didn't much bother coming all the way out to Australia, so it was amazing to finally see live performances on YT by bands I'd long enjoyed on vinyl.

Autistic awkwardness. Some things just aren't right.
Pattern-chaser, another thing to think about - not a progressive power band but a band that had a good deal of diverse talent in the early 90's (before Brad Nowell's death) is Sublime. Just three guys jamming but a lot of both canon and creativity.

Funny how we sometimes dig in and refuse to leave our comfort zone :)

This might be my favorite KC tune. As far as albums, I find Islands being the one I go back to the most.
You clearly prefer their quieter moments.
If you like being soothed by beautiful music, I'd recommend Andreas Vollenweider:
This one is a treat in the early morning when you need to be treated gently. It always gets the dog settling down too:

TY, I do like some Vangelis from time to time - if it's mellow and psychedelic it works.
I feel like with Cadence and Cascade they just nailed a canonical ballad formula. I still don't know if it was a good or bad move on my part but somewhere around age 27 I really started enjoying pieces of music in various genre when someone made tunes that absolutely nailed canon, and for that in drum n bass certain producers like D-Bridge and Loxy were experts (and increasingly Calibre puts them out). I mentioned Sublime earlier, that was a lot of the charm they had albeit they'd nail it in different corners between punk, ska, thrash, and reggae.

You misunderstand. It's difficult to explain, because it sounds weird if you aren't autistic yourself, or know someone (well) who is. It's an autistic thing.
I mostly avoid videos on the phone because I'm used to thinking of that at as expensive and the audio can't compare to studio headphones (which I have at my PC).It'll be interesting when and if Youtube comes up with a subchannel for Oculus and things like that, I don't necessarily know that I'd be averse as long as the content works.
