I had a coworker who was a big fan of both The Beatles and Pink Floyd, slightly in favor of The Beatles, and recommend that I get Revolver and Piper at the Gates of Dawn to compare them - IMHO Piper was more my speed - the soundscapes were deeper, and I can't remember exactly what I thought on Syd's lyrics but I would have to guess that he prototyped the rather thoughtful, cryptic, and sharp-witted style that Gilmour ran with.

Some good and bad news - the bad news first since the good news was turnaround - my Sony MDR-V900's bit it after well over a decade of service (I suppose that last part is still relatively good news if I think about it that way), the all-around good news - just got my Audio-Technica ATH-R70x's in the mail yesterday.

They're nice, super-flat but that'll mean I actually stand a good chance of mixing accurately on my headphones and it might be wise to envision the music this way rather than with extra frequency curves and 'phattening' which tends to cause bad mastering if you're going for that in a mix. I find myself listening to music far more often on headphones these days so these were a good investment.
