Philosophy Discussion Forums | A Humans-Only Club for Open-Minded Discussion & Debate

Humans-Only Club for Discussion & Debate

A one-of-a-kind oasis of intelligent, in-depth, productive, civil debate.

Topics are uncensored, meaning even extremely controversial viewpoints can be presented and argued for, but our Forum Rules strictly require all posters to stay on-topic and never engage in ad hominems or personal attacks.

Chat about anything your heart desires here, just be civil. Factual or scientific questions about philosophy go here (e.g. "When was Socrates born?"), and so most homework help questions belong here. Note, posts in the off-topic section will not increase new members post counts. This includes the introductions and feedback sections.

I only ever heard of Focus via the longstanding tongue-in-cheek hatred of Prog Rock from Half Man Half Biscuit.

Joseph Cotten is a distant relative of mine. "Citizen Kane" and "The Third Man" are both amazing movies. He had many other movie and TV roles, some good, some cheesy.

Excellent.
I found this the other day..
I'd not made much room for Genesis back in the day, as I was too busy with Pink F, Yes, Zep, Black Sabbath, ELP, ELO etc..
But check it out.

Nad Sylvan out-sings Gabriel or Collins and make quite a spectacle of a superannuated guru.
Hackett is supreme as per..
A terrific prog tune. Trick of the Tail is my favourite Genesis album. I loved the way Phil sang on the album but I'll agree that Nad does a great job and sounds a tad more comfortable with the high notes than the others.

Prog was the classical music of our generation, our ears being conditioned to the sounds of jazz and rock, yet wanting more challenge, variation, imagination and intelligence than that of the average pop fare.

An example was the Dutch group Focus, who seamlessly fused rock and fusion with various classical genres. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUZtI9LCgoM
Agreed. For me Yes, especially early Yes gave my ears that challenge that they so craved. Whilst many of my contemporaries were turning their heads to mush with ABBA and Disco, I was going the headphone crash out with those complex sounds.

I hadn't heard that he'd died until you said that. The Devil Went Down to Georgia is some top quality cheese. Brilliant.
Yeah, he was not really a favorite of mine, but I have a soft spot for certain examples of Doctor Demento type music...

I was especially dark on disco because piped music increasingly took over venues that once hosted live music. Events that focused at least somewhat on art were reduced to meat markets.

Still, my tastes are mellowing with age, and these days I especially love me some Jean Luc Ponty:

and Pat Metheney, whose music is more varied than many people realise:

In his honour:
I know where Syd Barrett lives:
My understanding is that, since their abduction by aliens, Syd and Elvis have been spotted doing coffee and doughnuts with Princess Di, Jim Morrison and Harold Holt in an undisclosed location in the jungles of South America.

I've read somewhere that the band called Television Personalities, who sang "I know where Syd Battett Lives" toured with Pink Floyd in the 80's, but they gave out Syd Battett's address on stage, so they were dropped. I think the rest of Pink Floyd were quite protective of poor old Syd.
