Philosophy Discussion Forums | A Humans-Only Club for Open-Minded Discussion & Debate

Humans-Only Club for Discussion & Debate

A one-of-a-kind oasis of intelligent, in-depth, productive, civil debate.

Topics are uncensored, meaning even extremely controversial viewpoints can be presented and argued for, but our Forum Rules strictly require all posters to stay on-topic and never engage in ad hominems or personal attacks.

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

And what the F are you talking about here?
WTF is "the consciousness" when it is at home?
We already established that you are blind to the central theme of philosophy, buddy.

Have you met one?
I've certainly met many idealists.
I think you might be tilting at windmills here.
I've met people who believe all sorts of things that seem strange to me in the 45+ years that I've been talking to people about philosophy. I don't like to assume what views people have, or assume that they can't have some unusual view.

Usually people are happy to share what their views are if you ask them--at least that's what's always seemed to happen when I talk to folks in person rather than online.
So, Atla seems to be implying, rather than saying out right, that the subject/object dichotomy is made up (implying a myth or falsehood).
Right. Which is why I was asking him if he buys that there are both people in the world and things that aren't people in the world (things like coffee cups, trees, etc., where he doesn't believe that those things are people).
You said that you percieve 90% of people on philosophy forums to be idealists. Did you spend your life among extreme idealists and solipsists, or what caused this?

Or maybe he could just give some hint of the Eastern idea he's referring to?

Re the comment about message boards, that was frustrated hyperbole (which should be obvious).

Re people I've encountered offline, I've encountered just about every view you can imagine.

So what, we've all encountered idealists and solipsists, and people from many religions, and people who think that the picture on the wall is out to get them.

Okay, so, maybe he could just give some hint of the colloquial Eastern as well as the Eastern as well as Western philosophical idea he's referring to?

Would that maybe get you to respond with some actual content?

There's not usually a "so what" to what I say other than what I'm saying. I like to be straightforward and not beat around the bush. That's why when people ask me what my point is I say, "I always type my point."

This sentence would probably be clearer as:

"Okay, so, maybe he could just give some hint of the colloquial Eastern as well as the Eastern/Western philosophical idea he's referring to?"

The aim was to get you to mention the idea you want common westerners to get around to. The aim wasn't to get you to quibble about whether it's an idea from eastern or western philosophy or both. The comment was in response to your "Life would be so much easier if people wouldn't forever conflate 'human/organism' consciousness with 'the' consciousness. Will the West really need another 50-100 years for that?" "The west" obviously didn't mean "the philosophical west" then but something like "the colloquial west" or "the common west," etc.

So what is "'the' consciousness" that you're referring to?

No, I find it better to ignore people who after 45 years of philosophy still have no idea why people are interested in consciousness (beyond some functionalist brain/mind models like the GNW).

I don't think anything like "I have no idea why people are interested in consciousness," and my view isn't functionalism. My view is also nothing like eliminative materialism, of course.

But sure, I don't really expect you to ever respond with any content, no matter how much you're prodded.

Responding to me is sure a funny way to ignore me, by the way.
