I think that she WAS bent on power, but mostly because she felt that SHE had the answers to solve or at least help them deal their problems.
Wrong as she was, the point remains.
Should she be punished - or even strangled - for her actions if they were made with some kind of good intent and based off a warped misconception of what is beneficial?
Remember that her misconception could be viewed as happenstance and not actually any fault of hers.
Ought her and her acts of cruelty be reprimanded - and to the extreme that Jack saw fit - if she was really just a well-intentioning robot?
She saw the opposite of herself in the world around her. She definately saw it in Jack. Consequently, she knew the other side of things and chose to continue on anyway. She is therefore responsible.
She and her actions do deserve punishment. But there is a right way to punish and a wrong way to punish. Jack chose the latter. Had he sought composure, been more understanding and compassionate, and tried relentlessly in a gentle fashion, he might have one day been able to truly reach her.
But his thoughts were not on her well-being, nor were they on forgiveness and reformation.
No, he was obsessed with the past and the injustice of it all. And the powerless rage that could gain strength if he willed it.
